Indian National Society for Aerospace and Related Mechanisms (INSARM), a non-profit professional body was founded in 1998 with Headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The primary objective of the society is to promote, evolve and stimulate interest in mechanisms related to aerospace and defense applications The society fosters Research & Development activity on aerospace and related mechanisms and bolsters a feeling of fellowship among the members of the society.
The society encourages widespread dissemination of knowledge and skills gained through research and experience in R&D institutions on mechanisms through collaborative research, seminars, conferences, workshops, journals and other aids. The society also identify thrust areas for new research on mechanism and promote activities related to design and development of the same.
INSARM Owes its origin to enduring vision of Shri.MK Abdul Majeed, an eminent scientist from Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO, Trivandrum, with a vast experience in the field of aerospace and related mechanisms. With his desire to interlink and bring together the scientific community working on space and defence related mechanisms all over Indian and abroad on a sharing platform ,the first national level seminar on Aerospace and Related Mechanisms (ARMS) was conducted in 1985 at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram. With the participation of 38 organizations and publication of numerous technical papers, the need to have inter-link and close ties among the scientific community was articulated, with a vision for venturing into a resolute platform.
This commitment to meet the national obligations was followed by the formation of National Advisory Council under the chairmanship of Dr.APJ.Abdul Kalam with Shri.MK.Abdul Majeed as the General Secretary. A key feature of the council was to prepare an expert panel in the field of mechanisms. It was in November 1996, during the second seminar of ARMS at VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram, the idea of establishing a national society of aerospace and related mechanisms as a common framework among scientific organizations, industrial enterprises and educational institutions was touted to fruitfulness.
The third seminar held in June, 1999 at DRDL, Hyderabad paved the way for the official inauguration of the INSARM. INSARM was inaugurated on 22nd June 1999 by Bharat Ratna Dr.APJ.Abdul Kalam and Prof.Satish Dhawan, renowned scientists who spearheaded the scientific community in the field of Space Research in India.A national executive committee under INSARM was constituted to skillfully boost and support the emerging areas of aerospace mechanisms with a highly capable array of scientific applications.
INSARM, over the years, emerged as a pioneering professional body by raising the scientific awareness and by lobbying efforts in research and development of mechanisms in order to ascertain that a large gamut of industrial and academia participation is encouraged for accruing the benefits of the overall space programme.INSARM had progressively developed with headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram and chapters at Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Agra; and had conducted several National level seminars, conferences, workshops with active participation from academia, industries, commercial organizations and individual specialists. Apart from the aerospace mechanisms for launch vehicles and satellites, INSARM also strive towards endorsing new researches and innovations with major thrust in areas, like mechanisms for robotics, smart mechanisms & micro-mechanisms, mechanisms for bio-engineering & medical applications, oceanography and docking fields.
Today with its chapters spread across india and with members from various institutions and organizations, like ISRO, DRDO, HAL, KELTEC, National Laboratories, and premier academic institutions, INSARM attempts to endow both technical as well as social platform for personnel involved in the field of mechanisms and to offer technological interchange for others with an interest in the same field fulfilling its objectives.
Objective of the Society is to serve as a professional body to promote, encourage, evolve and stimulate interest in mechanisms related to aerospace and defense applications
With a view to achieve the above objectives, Society will undertake the following activities:
